During the pre-Civil War late 1830's, teen-aged Brady gets caught up in the abolitionist activities of Christian newspaperman Elijah Lovejoy, and finds that his dream to become a cub-pilot on a Mississippi River steamboat will be impacted by a fugitive slave William Wells Brown. Lives are on the line as Lovejoy's printing presses keep getting dumped into the river by angry mobs.
